Although the first in a series of ten symphonies (the tenth remained unfinished), Symphony No. 1 shows all the typical qualities of Gustav Mahler as a symphonist. First, he used large forms, which is why all his symphonic creations were called “giant symphonic snakes” by critics of the time, with an ironic smile. Then, grand compositional and technical skills in orchestration and combining sound colors, as well as using a large performance apparatus. Many criticized the First Symphony for its “saturation of ferocious emotions”, about which Mahler himself said: “My need to express my feelings in music begins in this symphony only where the mysterious feelings are transmitted through the gate that leads to another world, a world that does not separate events through time and space.”
